Sticking to Your New Year's Resolutions
How to Stay on Track in 2019
As we enter into a new year full of fresh starts, it’s easy to set intentions just to have them wash away come February. This year, try integrating a few new steps into your resolution routine with these fool-proof motivational ideas below.
1) Display Your Goals
Setting New Year’s resolutions is an annual no-brainer. The challenge lies in execution. By writing down each of your goals, and keeping them close by your desk, refrigerator or bathroom mirror, you are reminding yourself daily of what you have set out to accomplish. Make sure your goals are obtainable and realistic, and reward yourself when you accomplish something big. This will help continue the cycle, and keep you on the road to success.
2) Activate in T-Minus 20 Seconds
According to Shawn Achor, the author The Happiness Advantage, the “20 Second Rule” can make or break your resolutions. If it takes over 20 extra seconds to get started, it likely won’t get done. For example, if your ukulele is in the closet rather than next to the sofa, it is less likely to get picked up and played. This "activation effort" can be enough to cause most people not to do an activity. By reducing the time it takes to begin a new activity in less than 20 seconds, chances are, it will get done.
3) Take Breaks
Do less to do more. Overworking yourself will ultimately lead to burnout, which is why taking breaks as soon as a couple hours after getting to work in the morning can lead to increased productivity. Schedule in your timer to get up and stretch every hour, or simply do a few jumping jacks to get the blood moving. Your body and mind will both thank you.
4) Breathe & Reflect
Take time each day to reflect on 3 things you are grateful for in your life. This can be as simple as your dog Fido’s great cuddle sesh to how delicious collagen hot chocolate is. Take a deep breath in your nose, filling up your lungs, hold for 4 counts, and release for 4 counts. Repeat 4 times and feel the bliss.
5) Make it Group Effort
Bigger commitments can be overcome with a little help from your friends (and family). If you have one big goal in mind for 2019, let your loved ones know, and give them ways of supporting you through your journey. When you feel yourself slipping, reach up for a helping hand, and get back on track.
